ELECTRIC PROPULSION SYSTEMS

The new electric drive systems from Fischer Panda are designed for boat owners who want to cruise peacefully.

Fischer Panda has succeeded in bringing the advantages and possibilities of diesel-electric propulsion from large ships to smaller vessels. In the Whisperprop propulsion system, the highly efficient eMotion diesel generator produces power for one or more propulsion systems, air conditioning systems, additional power consumers on board and for battery charging.

Fischer Panda electric drives are designed with modern and dynamic motors with permanent magnets. They provide greater thrust and significantly increase maneuverability.

Fischer Panda hybrid systems enable engine operation and battery charging at the same time. The systems are available, depending on the required performance, with a voltage of 48V.

• Very quiet
• Better pressure throughout the speed range
• Improved maneuverability
• One generator can power several drives
• Optimal performance using advanced generator technology
• Multiple control stations are possible
• Regeneration possibilities (regeneration possibilities on demand)

The new Whisperprop Drive is designed for boat owners who want to experience the experience of electric sailing.

The boat can be powered exclusively by batteries, parallel drive and a generator-driven system (hybrid).

ELECTRIC PROPULSION MOST FREQUENT QUESTIONS

WHAT DOES ``HYBRID'' FISCHER PANDA MEAN?

The “hybrid” Fischer Panda is a combination of an electric drive motor and a diesel generator. The electric motor drives the battery bank, and the generator (DC) charges the battery bank. If the output of the generator is optimally adapted to the output of the electric motor, continuous operation at maximum performance is possible.

WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF THE FISCHER PANDA ELECTRICAL SYSTEM?

The main components are:
1. Electric motor with drive (shaft, POD or parallel drive)
2.EasyBox (motor regulator, fuses, cooling power supply, etc.)
3. Battery assembly (up to 20 kW: 48V DC system, > 20kW – 100 kW: 360/400 V DC
4. Control unit including display (supervision, adjustment and control of all functions)
5. Throttle control (single or double, depending on the number of drive motors)
6. Option: battery charger
7. Option: generator for charging batteries

WHAT ARE THE BASIC COMPONENTS NEEDED FOR THE SYSTEM?

Components 1 – 6 (if the system runs on batteries).

WHAT TYPES OF MOTORS DOES FISCHER PANDA OFFER?

Shaft motors (for direct mounting or on an existing propeller shaft)
POD Engines (“Aziprops”) for installation under the hull. It is possible to mount them either fixed or rotating

WHICH ENGINE VERSIONS DOES THE FISCHER PANDA OFFER?

Current (May 2018): 3.8kW to 20kW (48V DC Safety Extra Low Voltage)
> 20 kW to 100 kW (100V / 360V / 400 V DC high voltage)
Special engines (eg engines for submarines, engines for special vessels)

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ``SERIAL HYBRID'' AND ``PARALLEL HYBRID''?

In the case of a “series hybrid drive”, the diesel generator directly supplies the electric motor. The electric motor is the main drive of the ship.
In the case of “parallel hybrid drive”, the electric motor is switched in parallel to the drive shaft of the drive motor. This means that the electric motor “works” as a generator when the boat is running with its diesel engine.
When the diesel engine is switched off, the vessel can only be driven with the electric engine. Since, in general, the power of the diesel engine and the power of the electric motor are very different, it is important to choose the appropriate reduction and clutch. Please contact us. We will be happy to help you.

DOES FISCHER PANDA OFFER HDS ("HYBRID DRIVE SYSTEM") AS A "PARALLEL HYBRID SYSTEM"?

Yes, our motors can also be installed in parallel on the main drive. Fischer Panda will be happy to help you if you want to install a parallel hybrid drive.

WHAT ABOUT THE GUARANTEE?

For commercial use 1 year, for private use 2 years.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF THE FISCHER PANDA SYSTEM COMPARED TO THE COMPETITION?

CAN I TEST THE BOAT WITH THIS SYSTEM?

Yes, on our local lake in Paderborn. Our boat is equipped with a 10 kW propulsion system and can be tested on request.
If you’re in Berlin, you can test drive a 37-foot motor yacht with a Fischer Panda propulsion system.
Please make an appointment with us if you are interested in test driving these boats.

CAN WE ORDER BATTERIES, BATTERY CHARGERS AND PROPELLERS THROUGH FISCHER PANDA?

Yes, on request we can supply the complete package, including batteries, chargers and propellers.
Fischer Panda makes a custom propeller individually, depending on the boat and application.

HOW TO CALCULATE WHICH ELECTRIC DRIVE IS IDEAL FOR MY VESSEL?

1 kW per ton of displacement is sufficient for internal water (standing water).
2.5 kW per ton of displacement should be installed if the ship is driven on rivers or in the open sea.

WHAT CAN I USE FROM MY EXISTING SYSTEM? (AXLE)

The drive shaft and it is possible to use the existing propeller.

CAN I USE MY EXISTING FISCHER PANDA AC GENERATOR FOR A HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM?

Not really. You can continue to use the alternator for internal power supply (230 V / 400 V). In addition, you can use your 230 V alternator as a power source for charging devices that charge the drive battery.

CAN WE USE A GENERATOR THAT HAS A LOWER OUTPUT FROM THE NOMINAL VOLTAGE OF THE SYSTEM?

Yes, that is possible. However, this reduces the continuous output of the generator. In this case, the energy difference between the system and the generator will be taken from the batteries.

CAN I CONTINUE USING SAILDRIVE?

It can. However, it must be taken into account and if the opportunity arises, the installation of the Saildrive must be reinforced in a suitable way.
In the event that the load changes rapidly, the high torque of the electric motor can lead to damage to the Saildrive if it is not designed in a stable manner.
Moreover, Saildrive is quite loud so it is not possible to enjoy silent cruising with electric drive.
Therefore, Fischer Panda does not advise skippers to use Saildrive in combination with our engines.

WHERE CAN I PLACE THE GENERATOR, BATTERIES AND ELECTRICAL DEVICES ON THE VESSEL?

The placement can be determined in accordance with the regulations and blueprints of the vessel by the manufacturer. However, Fischer Panda must design the lengths and cross-sections of the cables in advance.

CAN WE USE TWO GENERATORS WITH DIFFERENT PERFORMANCE?

Yes, almost any combination is possible.

DO I NEED TWO GROUPS OF BATTERIES IF I HAVE TWO DRIVES?

No, one group of batteries is enough for two drives.

HOW MUCH IS THE FUEL CONSUMPTION OF A DIESEL GENERATOR?

0,3 l / kW / h

HOW FISCHER PANDA DETERMINES ELECTRICAL POWER E.G. ``10 KW''?

Mechanical output data = shaft power. (This is actually the output available to the drive system).

ADVANTAGES OF WEIGHT IN COMPARISON WITH THE PROPULSION MOTOR?

There is no weight advantage as the weight savings due to the lightweight electric drive is mostly offset by the weight of the required batteries.

WHY IS A HIGHER VOLTAGE NEEDED IN THE CASE OF A STRONGER ELECTRIC DRIVE?

As large current discharges negatively affect battery life, the maximum discharge power of our systems must not exceed approx. 250 A (in the case of 20 kW systems 400 A). So, more powerful drive systems (> 20 kW… 80 kW) operate between 96 V and 360 V DC voltage. 100 kW requires 400 V DC.

CAN WE BE COMPLETELY WITHOUT A BATTERY BANK - CAN WE SAIL WITH JUST A GENERATOR?

From a technical point of view it is possible, but we urgently advise you not to do it. The battery is most needed as a buffer to keep the maximum propeller loads away from the generator. As a mechanical system, the generator cannot react as fast as it needs to. If you don’t have a battery, it can lead to voltage dips or spikes that can cause the system to shut down automatically.

WHAT TYPE OF BATTERY / MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDS (FISCHER PANDA)?

It recommends lithium batteries that do not require active cooling (lithium-iron phosphate LiFePO4 batteries brand SUPER-B).
In the case of lead-acid batteries, AGM batteries are very suitable.

I HAVE SERVICE BATTERIES ON BOARD - CAN I KEEP USING THEM?

We recommend that you do not use service batteries in connection with the electric drive, as the drive system battery should contain batteries of the same type and age.
Of course, you can continue to use your existing service and engine batteries for your internal power supply.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE OPTIMAL PROPELLER FOR FISCHER PANDA ELECTRIC DRIVEN BOAT?

Fischer Panda works with different engineers who specialize in making proper propellers. Based on all data about the vessel and drive, the optimal propeller is created.

MUST COMMISSIONING BE BY AN AUTHORIZED FISCHER PANDA PERSON?

Yes, the commissioning must be done by an authorized person from Fischer Panda because it is necessary to obtain a warranty / guarantee from Fischer Panda.

CAN I INSTALL THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MYSELF?

Installation of the system should be carried out by specialized electricians or an authorized Fischer Panda representative / technician. Improper installation can lead to system error which can lead to security issues. Fischer Panda can assist the installer with detailed installation instructions or, if necessary, a technician.
A high voltage system MUST be installed by a trained electrician or specialist company.
